1. Choose what you want to emphasize. You can choose outfits to make parts of your body look bigger, smaller, or more obvious.

2. Keep track of your measurements. Whether you’re buying clothing off the rack or having it tailored, keeping track of your exact measurements is key. Write them down on paper and keep them somewhere safe. Circumference of your head for hats. Upper arm for sleeves (women). Neck, which is more significant in men’s clothing. Chest, widest part of your chest or breast. Natural waistline. Hip, which is more important for women’s clothing. Inseam for men’s clothing. From the crotch to the bottom of the foot.

3. Make sure that your clothing fits. The best fitting garments are those that fit well but do not restrict movement. Clothes that fit well but are ill-fitting will look bad no matter what they’re styled with.  

4. Buy clothing based on your current figure. If you’re planning on losing weight, wait until you’ve lost some before buying new clothes. Otherwise, you’ll end up spending money on clothes that won’t fit you very well.  

5. Look at yourself from the back. If a garment doesn’t quite fit now but you know it will look great once you lose weight, don’t buy it. Shop for the figure you currently have, not the one you’d like to have. You don’t want to spend money on clothes you’ll never wear.  

6. Don’t always follow fashion trends. Trends come and go, so if a particular trend is unflattering on you then avoid wearing it. Create your own unique style and only adopt trends that fit it well.
